If you're reading this on Labour Day... why? You've much better things to do than to read a post rehashing trailers that you've probably watched on YouTube. But since you're here, take a swift scan through this and, after that, go out and touch grass.
The Resident Evil games felt like they should have ended at their second- okay, maybe, third instalment before it started losing its horror roots and became hacky. Resident Evil 6 was the last straw for me as it traded survival horror for action-heavy shooter mechanics. Then, five years later, video game developer Capcom announced a new project with a trailer for the crowd at E3 2016. Everybody assumed it was a new horror IP, and when the trailer ended with the title, "Resident Evil 7", the crowd went nuts.
First of all, the trailer departed from RE's usual third-person perspective for a first-person POV. Second, it starred a new protagonist who wasn't Chris Redfield or Leon Kennedy. Third, it lacked the action-heavy gameplay, and instead, returned to the survival horror that we know and love.
This is the same for the Resident Evil film that's coming out this year.
From the trailer, it looked like it strayed from the Milla Jovovich-driven adaptation and instead goes for the tension-heavy, atmospheric horror setting of an abandoned house and the mystery within. Zach Cregger, the director and co-writer of RE, said that it's not an adaptation from the current games, but rather, it's a movie that is set in the universe of Resident Evil.
We can't fault Cregger's reasoning, because whatever he's doing, the trailer looks scary as hell.
After what we thought was a good ending, Ted Lasso was resurrected for another cash grab season. But I kid, we need another burst of hope in these trying times. Make us believe, Mr Lasso. Make us believe once more.
Am I the only one who finds it weird that there's another Jackass sequel? I've always considered their third movie to be the best and should be the last, but what do I know? I'm not a film executive with a stick looking to beat a deceased horse.
While it looks like there will be new ways of getting hurt for our enjoyment, the film will also feature clips of previous stunts. Which is why Bam Margera, was spotted in the trailer. If this were the last chapter in the Jackass legacy, it would be a perfect bookend if Margera returned for some of the stunts.
