The Everyday Epic of the BYD SEAL 6 DM-i

BYD SEAL 6 DM-i makes the argument for car ownership here
Published: 18 May 2026

If you wished daily commute felt less like a Sisyphean punishment and more of a lifestyle choice, BYD recently launched just the car: the SEAL 6 DMi. Actually, two cars, because this plugin hybrid comes in both sedan and touring form.

The SEAL 6 DMi sedan is the sleek, fastback silhouette you’d drive to a client meeting. The SEAL 6 DMi Touring stretches out in the back, adds roof rails, a handsfree tailgate, and a rear wiper. Design language takes inspiration from the ocean. The headlights are crystal-inspired LEDs with a DoubleL signature, while the rear lights are a neon flow.

Inside, ergonomic layouts, soft touch surfaces, and spacious seating that families can appreciate, but also the solo drivers who pretend they have the family size to justify it. Infotainment system that's large enough to make your phone jealous, and the panoramic sunroof for all the natural light if you were a houseplant.

Boot space is where the SEAL 6 DMi flexes its everyday credentials. The sedan offers 491 litres, expandable to 1,370 litres when you fold the seats down. Enough room for groceries, luggage, or the existential weight of adulthood. The Touring variant one-ups with 670 litres, expandable to 1,535 litres, essentially making it a rolling storage unit with better aesthetics.

At the heart of both variants is the Super DM-i plug-in hybrid system, combining a 1.5 litre petrol engine, a responsive electric motor and the famously durable LFP Blade Battery. This setup prioritises electric drive for city trips—quiet, clean, and smugly emission-free, while seamlessly switching to petrol for longer journeys. Delivering up to 1,300km for the sedan and 1,400km for the Touring, it’s just enough to drive to KL and back with a detour to Malacca for the–let’s face it–superior versions of Singaporean dishes.

The long-lasting LFP replaces the traditional lead acid 12V battery, resulting in less routine maintenance, lower costs, and fewer headaches. The kind of reliability that doesn’t make headlines, but does make your wallet sigh in relief. And if that’s not the definition of an ultimate everyday car, then perhaps we’ve been living everyday life all wrong.
