Outrageous or Outstanding? Met Gala 2025 Outfits Facts

Two Gen Z editorial staff members sound off on the looks that worked and didn't at Met Gala 2025
Published: 7 May 2025

This year’s Met Gala unfolded under the theme Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, inviting a celebration of elegance not as restraint, but as flamboyant assertion. Inspired by centuries of Black sartorial ingenuity, the night was a tableau of precision, pride, and protest—where tailoring became a tool for storytelling.

If "superfine" was the goal, some of the Met Gala 2025 attendees undeniably treated it as an invitation to push boundaries—some with striking artistry, others with apparent misfires. But did it deliver a cohesive vision—or just a clash of avant-garde extremes?

N: I love that he’s wearing his own brand, it ties in so naturally with the theme and the dress code. It just makes the whole look feel that much more personal. And don’t even get me started on the hair—it’s giving art, it’s giving culture, it’s giving roots. The way it ties into the whole look? I’m obsessed.

Y: The rapper stepped onto the red carpet with bold accessories, styling his braids to mimic a kiss curl—such a detailed, yet stylish nod to the 1920s and the Harlem Renaissance era. Lowkey obsessed with how clean and timeless this look is. And the fact he designed it himself? Respek.

Jaden Smith

N: Be so fr right now. The checkered cape is giving, picnic blanket, not Met Gala couture. And the wires on his face? Babe, is everything okay at home?

Y: Not totally sure how I feel about the hair… I get the artsy vibe he might be going for, but it’s kinda giving messy, not intentional. And it doesn’t really vibe with the rest of the outfit, especially the checkered cape, which is a bit questionable.

Alton Mason

N: Everything about this look is nothing short of iconic, head to toe. The silver glitter ensemble paired with the matching eye mask? Absolute perfection. I’m completely obsessed. Easily one of my faves of the night!

Y: Totally slayed the cutouts and high-neck vibes—giving major Giorno Giovanna from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure energy. It’s also superfine and superbold. Old-school meets futuristic, and I’m here for it.

Walton Goggins

N: The Thom Browne skirt, the inside-out trench, the jewellery? It didn’t feel try-hard, just effortlessly bold. Honestly, didn’t see it coming, but I’m so here for it.

Y: He 100% understood the “tailored for you” assignment and served in that Thom Browne suit. The structured, edgy design and black-and-white contrast hit so hard, and the visible stitching? Lowkey genius. It's all perfectly balanced with that bold pleated skirt moment under the coat.

Shaboozey

N: The silhouette is absolutely unreal and that blue beadwork peeking out from under the cropped coat, pure magic. This is how you properly dress up to a Met Gala while still staying on theme.

Y: Easily one of my fave looks—this is literally a super fine fit. The fact he matched his grills to the outfit? So extra in the best way; it adds the perfect pop of colour. You really can’t go wrong in a full Robert Wun look, especially with that cropped blazer—it’s giving chic, sharp, and everything.

Colman Domingo

N: Domingo’s such a fashion icon. He’s setting the bar sky-high for menswear, and honestly, no one does it quite like him. The blue cape? A moment. The zoot suit reveal? Flawless. He really said, “watch and learn."

Y: I don’t hate the look, but I really respect the cape tribute to André Leon Talley—iconic move honouring a legend. That said, the cape is kinda giving lion dance meets choir robe. But once he revealed the fit underneath? For real, that was the moment—loud, luxe, and totally unexpected in the best way.

André 3000

N: This fit is giving cool uncle vibes—the one who spoils his nieces and nephews and does it in style. The piano might seem random, but honestly? It’s so him, and that’s what makes the whole look hit even harder.

Y: NGL, I was gagged when I saw this. It’s funny but also kinda deep—like, the piano actually means something to him and connects to his personal music journey. That’s cool.

Damson Idris

N: I live for iconic people doing iconic things, and this? Yeah, this was the moment. From the bedazzled helmet dripping in 20,000 Swarovski crystals to the dramatic reveal of that red suit, everything was perfectly executed.

Y: Always here for a serve with a plot twist. First impression? Jaw dropped when he pulled up in a full racing suit and helmet—a bold (and slightly questionable) choice for the Met, not gonna lie. But then he really hit the gas and revealed that fire three-piece red Tommy Hilfiger suit underneath? Jaw dropped again. Loved how the fit still matched the bedazzled helmet—fashion AND fast lane ready. Man’s clearly prepped for F1 to speed into theaters this summer.

N: He’s serving pure opulence in that stunning robe, and the red looks absolutely incredible on him. The gloves and shirt cuffs pull the whole look together effortlessly. It's polished, striking, and seriously well done.

Y: Everything about this fit? Chef’s kiss. The shiny, textured draped coat over the classic red suit, plus boots over suiting pants—so fire. But those cuffs? Yeah… lowkey wish I could Ctrl+Z them out.

Sam Smith

N: I’m sorry but Sam Smith’s look is giving full-on magician—not sure if that was the vibe, but here we are. The silhouette? Kinda has me wondering if it was meant to look like that or if something went wrong. It’s giving ballerina… but not in a cute way.

Y: Kinda iffy on this one… but not gonna lie, I’m into the silhouette. Lowkey looks mad comfy too.

Janelle Monáe

N: Janelle never misses. Like, I literally can’t stop looking at her outfits and taking in every single detail from the illusions to the moving eyewear? The creativity behind it all…THIS is why I’m obsessed with fashion. It’s giving Alice in Wonderland x A Clockwork Orange and it's everything I wanted and more from her.

Y: I’m vibing with this look. Janelle really turned tailoring into something trippy and next level cool.

Lisa

N: This could’ve been such an iconic moment, if the silhouette had actually given what it needed to. I love the detailed embroidery with Black historical figures like Rosa Parks, that part was powerful. But as a whole? The fit just didn’t land for the Met.

Y: Shining bright and serving pantless realness in that glittering Louis Vuitton bodysuit and matching cheeky undies? Lisa had all the eyes on her. The messy updo? Chef’s kiss. She styled it with a black LV purse and classic pumps—definitely giving hot girl Met Gala vibes and turning heads left and right.

Teyana Taylor

N: One of the first to step out—and already that girl. Every look that came after was judged against hers. The bar? Instantly raised. She embodied Black dandyism in its most striking form, with an outfit so rich in detail and intention it felt like a love letter to the theme itself. In my eyes, she absolutely won the night. I’m still not over it.

Y: Teyana definitely knows how to steal the show—mixing sophistication, individuality, and attention to detail like no other. She absolutely nailed the Black dandyism vibe, especially with those brooches and chains, which took the look to a whole new level. Queen energy for real.

Anne Hathaway

N: It genuinely feels like I’ve seen her in this exact outfit before, and I can’t help but feel a bit let down that she didn’t try something new or push the boundaries a little. That said, I do appreciate that the look was a tribute to André Leon Talley. Yes, it’s understated—some might say boring—but honestly? I think that’s alright. I actually like the idea of white attendees stepping back and letting their POC peers take centre stage. Was it intentional? Maybe, maybe not.

Y: Thought she could’ve done better, honestly—too classic for what I was hoping for. Kinda torn on the striped skirt, though… The top feels casual, like something she’d wear on the daily. Was expecting something bolder and more chic from her. Honestly, if she stepped out of her comfort zone, she’d totally pop off. Nonetheless, respect to her—and that face? Card never declines.

FKA Twig

N: I get the vibe she was going for—the dress totally channels 1920s flapper energy, and I’m into the concept. But the colour? Kinda washes her out, not gonna lie. A bolder shade would’ve slapped. And can we talk about the missed opportunity for finger waves? That would’ve tied it all together perfectly. Overall though, it’s giving Josephine Baker realness.

Y: The top half? Pure slay—serving classy and sexy with zero effort. But the bottom half was a major miss, especially that brown fur. Lowkey distracting… had me wanting to Photoshop it white.

Diana Ross

N: Lowkey, she could rock up in a potato sack and I’d still be on my feet clapping. That said, I love that Diana teamed up with her grandson Evan Ross and designer Ugo Mozie for this look. The 18-feet train? Iconic. And the rhinestone-embellished names of her family? So wholesome. It’s not just fashion—it’s legacy, and she wore it beautifully.

Y: Easily one of the best looks. The body-hugging silver embellished dress ate, and that over-the-top white feathered hat? Extra in the best way. The 18-foot train was a full-on wow moment—gave big Rihanna 2023 energy. Truly iconic queen behaviour.

Jennie

N: Jennie absolutely nailed the brief, but let’s be real—the train’s kinda wearing her a bit. From the waist up though? Flawless. I love the contrast in the look, but it does feel like a missed chance to play with some brighter, punchier colours. Still, no doubt about it, this is easily one of her strongest Met looks yet.

Y: All eyes on Miss Ruby Jane—lighting up the Met Gala in Chanel, per usual. She never misses, serving that vintage flair with main character energy. This look totally outshined her previous Met fit—way stronger and way better.

Megan Thee Stallion

(GETTY IMAGES)

N: Lowkey feels like Megan could’ve gone harder. it’s giving Diana Ross déjà vu and felt a bit underwhelming tbh. That said, the coat? Fab. The hair? Literally show-stopping. It steals the spotlight from the dress in the best way. I do love the nod to Josephine Baker in The French Way, though. I’m guessing they kept the dress simple so the hair and coat could do all the talking—and fair enough, ’cos the glam is doing bits.

Y: This look kinda feels familiar—giving me major Diana Ross vibes. Not totally sold on the high ponytail style, but that diamond line? Definitely the cherry on top.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams in MONCLER.

N: Bit of a miss for me, not gonna lie. The colour is absolutely gorgeous on her, no complaints there. But the fabric looks rather cheap, and the cape straight-up looks like a hotel duvet. Is it just me, or…?

Y: The icy blue dress is stunning and really highlights her beautiful neckline. I don’t hate the look, but it’s definitely not her best. The tufted satin cape trailing over is gorgeous, though—love the colour and material combo. Still, something about it just feels a little off…

Cardi B

Cardi B in BURBERRY.
(GETTY IMAGES)

N: 250,000 hand-beaded moments of pure drama. This look is actually insane. The detail, the texture, the richness of it all? It’s giving luxe on luxe. Cardi B always knows how to make a statement, and this one? It’s gonna haunt me in the best way. Absolute divine.

Y: Not gonna lie, I’m not usually a fan of green, but Cardi B? She slayed it. Obsessed with the green contacts—they pop and pair so perfectly with the green velvet suit. And the way she’s rocking her natural hair texture with that ‘80s Diana Ross-inspired look? Big mood. So fierce, so confident—a moment.
