Wow, this week has been busy with trailer releases. In a bid to continue fanning the flames of speculation, let us go over these few gems that were released and provide some wild takes on what's going to be shown in the near future.
A bit of a backstory: this isn't the Brendan Fraser-led film that we are familiar with. Rather this is a remake of an IP that belongs to Universal Pictures, which is part of the Universal Classic Monster series (Brendan Fraser's The Mummy also used that same IP). Originally those movie monsters were part of some MCU-level hijinks where all them were part of a shared world called the Dark Universe. To kickstart this scheme, they remade The Mummy in 2017 starring Tom Cruise. It failed to make bank and Dark Universe was promptly cancelled.
But second chances exist in our universe: a fourth Mummy film starring Fraser and Rachel Weisz was greenlit and this year we get to see a more horror-led remake by Lee Cronin. Cronin is known as that dude who breathe new life into the Evil Dead franchise and from what we see in the trailer (hints of Heredity, I see) we are sure that he'll bring that same magic into revitalising the Mummy franchise.
Another remake and from my favourite film about marital strife, no less. Over Your Dead Body is the American take on the Norwegian film, The Trip and I'm intrigued on whether the dark humour can be translated. There's great banter going on between Jason Segel's and Samara Weaving's roles as the couple wanting to off each other. It looks like a lot of people are gonna get hurt (FOR OUR ENTERTAINMENT) and Jorma Taccone (one-third of the Lonely Island) is directing this and also, having Timothy Olyphant in it, is yet, another draw to watch it.
Immediately, it's giving a dash of Get Out and The Substance. Also glad that they didn't have the Asian lead wear white woman prosthetics and make-up. No, that honour still belongs to White Chicks.
Are we suffering from Toy Story fatigue yet? I thought Toy Story 3 was a perfect bookend to the series but I guess there's still some gas in the merchandising storytelling.
Anyway, from the trailer alone, the toys go up against a tablet and this seems too on-the-nose. I don't know how the toys are gonna get out of this. I mean, I'm a goddamn adult, who knows the dangers of screen and I still can't fall prey to them.
Cillian Murphy returns as Tommy Shelby, who now lives as a recluse. You know he's living the non-Peaky Blinder life because he has normal hair. But, alas, he is drawn back into the world because his son (played by Barry Keoghan) is "running the Peaky Blinders like it's 1919 all over again". We're still not sure what "The Immortal Man" refers to but odds are, it could allude to how Murphy still looks the same as he did when he first started this role in 2013.
Oooh, looks like there's gonna be a spat within House Targaryen. This season, we can expect to to see the Battle of the Gullet, which is this huge fuck-off war on the high seas.
In anticipation of Gorillaz's next album, The Mountain, a short film will be shown that explains what the album is about. Inspired by Disney's The Jungle Book, the short will also act as a music video for "The Mountain", "The Moon Cave" and "The Sad God" from the band's ninth studio album. We can't wait.
After a lacklustre second album (Penith), we thought that Lil Dicky has holed himself up in the studio, trying to work on his next album but it looks like he, his wife, Kristin Batalucco and Benny Blanco were working on a video podcast called Friends Keep Secrets (which is also the title of Blanco's debut album). Set in Lil Dicky and Batalucco's home, a revolving door of guests drop in like Paul Rudd, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ed Sheeran and even Blanco's wife, Selena Gomez.
I don't know if it would be as funny and/or good as Dave but I guess we'll find out as the pilot dropped a day ago.
One of the biggest creepypasta lore is finally gonna be a feature film. While nothing about about the Backrooms trailer has revealed much, it also feels a little... meh? I'm just not getting that sense of eeriness or foreboding that I get when I watched Kane Parsons' original short.
Is this the last instalment of the Scream franchise? Will the twist be satisfactory? The trailer seems to indicate so. But it's so good to have Sidney (played by Neve Campbell) back to tie up the series.
