Look. It's an inevitability that alternative energy sources are the way to go and it's great that car companies are leaning into it. Porsche, which is known for its 911, has for two decades, turned the automobile world on its head with the introduction of the SUV that's also a Porsche, finally adds an electric version to its Cayenne range.

The Cayenne Electric has an 800-volt architecture and a 113kWh battery built into the car's structure rather than being bolted beneath it. Charging tops out at 400kW, enough for a 10-to-80 per cent top-up in under 16 minutes. The battery can be split into two 400-volt banks for dual charging and braking recuperation hits 600kW, borrowed in spirit from Porsche's Formula E programme.

Expect three variants. The entry Cayenne Electric makes 325kW (435hp) and 835Nm, hits 100km/h in 4.8 seconds and tops out at 230km/h, with a WLTP range of 642km. Then, you have the Cayenne S Electric with 490kW (657hp), a 3.8-second sprint and 653km of range. Coming in at the top, is the Cayenne Turbo Electric that puts down 850kW (1,140hp) and 1,500Nm, enough for 100km/h in 2.5 seconds and a 260km/h top speed.

Cayenne Electric models arrive with their own adaptive air suspension with PASM, optional rear-axle steering, and the Active Ride system on S and Turbo variants, which allows for wheel loads to keep the body level under acceleration, braking and cornering. There are the standard Digital Key, Automatic Parking with 2D Surround View, a BOSE Surround Sound system. You can opt for a personalised combo, like Lavender and Delgada Green leather options or Club Leather finishes. Want the option of a panoramic roof? That's possible. Want one with a cabin mood-lit on command? Go for the electro-chromatic Variable Light Control.

If you're after something with more attitude, there's the Cayenne Coupé Electric, its roofline borrowing a flyline from the 911 and its drag coefficient dropping to 0.23 against the SUV's 0.25. With a standard Sport Chrono package, rear-axle steering and a fixed panoramic roof, the Coupé Electric will manage 1,347 litres of boot space plus a 90-litre front trunk.
