There was always kinship between ISSEY MIYAKE and Apple.

When Steve Jobs visited Sony's factories in the 1980s, he was taken by the employees' uniforms that were designed by Issey Miyake. Jobs called Miyake and asked if he could design a vest for Apple but the employees didn't cotton to working in a uniform. Instead, Miyake created the black turtlenecks that became Jobs' signature "uniform".

Now, ISSEY MIYAKE and Apple come together once more for the iPhone Pocket. This singular 3D-knitted construction was created to carry any iPhone (and any pocketable miscellany). Crafted in Japan, the iPhone Pocket features a "ribbed open structure" that bore traits of the original pleats by ISSEY MIYAKE. So, when the carrier is stretched, it subtly reveals its contents.

The iPhone Pocket comes in two versions, either with a long strap or a short strap. Depending on which version you choose, the iPhone Pocket can be "handheld, tied onto bags, or worn directly on the body". For the version with the long strap, it comes in three colourways (sapphire, cinnamon, and black), while the short strap variant is available in eight hues (lemon, mandarin, purple, pink, peacock, sapphire, cinnamon, and black).

According to Yoshiyuki Miyamae, design director of MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO, the iPhone Pocket's design reflects on the relationship between the user and their iPhone. "[The] iPhone Pocket explores the concept of ‘the joy of wearing iPhone in your own way.’ The simplicity of its design echoes what we practice at ISSEY MIYAKE—the idea of leaving things less defined to allow for possibilities and personal interpretation."

Set as a limited-release, we wager that the iPhone Pocket will sell out quick. And why shouldn't it? It's not every day (or decade) that two design giants reunite to create something so weirdly eye-catching.

Available this Friday, 14 November, the iPhone Pocket retails for SGD219 (short strap) and SGD329 (long strap). The iPhone Pocket is only available at Apple Orchard Road exclusively.
