Okay, we all knew. Like gin, tequila comes in a fun variety of eclectic packaging and with spotty memories of a reckless night dancing with a friend of a friend, his policeman friend and receiving a letter from the club that they’ve found your stolen wallet weeks later. Who? It’s not relevant to the story.
The world’s most awarded tequila brand is not one to shoot down nor get drunk on. Well, maybe the latter, but only via slow, appreciated savourings. And because liquor is always finding something to celebrate, this special edition shines on the very legacy and agriculture of Tequila Valley.
GuachiMonton takes inspiration from Los Guachimontones, clearly. You see the obvious homage to the circular pyramids and the rich, red clay that forms the archaeological wonder in the ceramic crimson housing and distinct round cap that both sport steeped cuts.
Even the Colección range, where limited-edition decanters are custom-designed by renowned artists, still fall within the bounds of the classic 1800 silhouette. This towering form is as unique as it comes. Through this release, the brand also provides long term support towards conservation efforts and educational initiatives of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
The stunning Jalisco soil is where today’s best blue weber agave is grown too. The process is an unadulterated crafting of that goodness with a 40-hour cooking period in traditional masonry ovens. The añejo is then aged for a year minimum in American and French oak barrels, but this time, with a twist.
Finishing in orange liqueur casks, it adds a citrus nuance from the fruit sharing the same terroir. To the eye, the warm tint further sets it apart. On the tongue, its layered saccharine. So how does one relish a tequila like this? Surprisingly effective as an Old Fashioned. Or neat, on the rocks, accompanied by chocolate. It’s just, you know, best enjoyed responsibly.
1800 GuachiMonton is available at Burnt Ends Bar, High House and online via Cellarbration.
