What the Hell is Going On in this Weapons Trailer?

Seventeen children vanished without a trace: that’s the start of the latest horror film, Weapons.

Zach Cregger—he, of comedy group, The Whitest Kids U'Know—cast his lot into the horror genre with Barbarian in 2022. After the financial and critical success of that film, Cregger followed that with a spec script, Weapons, which prompted a bidding war among several movie studios. Two years later under a veil of secrecy, we finally have a trailer for Weapons.

The premise: All but one child in a class at an elementary school disappeared on the same night. Now, the people of Maybrook are dealing with the mystery and the loss and has trained their ire on the teacher of said class.

Now that all sounds pretty straightforward until you watch the trailer. According to Cregger, in his interview with Entertainment Weekly, the "mystery is going to propel you through at least half of the movie, but that is not the movie.” he said. After multiple viewings of the trailer, I've no clue about what the film is ultimately gonna be about but at the 1:15 minute mark, the word "parasites" is written on the blackboard and that might have something to do with it. Maybe.

It may not answers everything you need to know plot-wise but as a trailer, it is effective in leaving a lot of room for intrigue, especially how the missing children ran.

Julia Garner leads the cast as the teacher and Josh Brolin plays the brooding father of one of the missing kids. Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan round out the ensemble. But the real co-star might be the viral breadcrumb trail—a fictional website, maybrookmissing.net that's stuffed with redacted documents and archival creepiness, with one news report about Barbarian being set in the same universe as Weapons.

Weapons is scheduled for release on 8 August, 2025. Given the bidding war and Cregger's last film, don’t assume you know what movie you’re watching until the credits roll.
