You already know how significant this year is to The Macallan by now. Not everyone gets to turn 200 years old, and not everyone gets to distill that legacy in bottled expressions. This is a continuum, and as such, The Macallan's next chapter is aptly named The Timeless Collections. This defines the single malt Scotch's identity that comprises of the Double Cask and Sherry Oak Collections. Except now, they make you do a double take because the house has invited graphic design maestro David Carson to do his thing in honouring them.
It's undisputed that classics ought to remain the same. But great things often deserve a timely expression of its enduring appeal. Leaving the best of its very essence untouched, The Macallan's refreshed and modern perspective at the hands of longstanding collaborator, who conveniently happens to be an acclaimed contemporary graphic designer, does just that.
There are many winks to heritage. From the distinct silhouette of The Macallan Distillery and its sweeping green roof to triangle shoulder labels representing the famed Sherry Triangle of Spain, it takes a keen eye to spot them all.
Rear label designs, for instance, incorporate a new cask type symbol. Whether American or European oak, we know the importance their distinction bring to the aromas and flavours instilled. One important and highly practical addition is the unique QR code not only for insight into the narrative, but greater traceability.
We would bereft you of the best way to experience this if we left without telling you about the commemorative event. The immersive concept tells of the very lifeblood of The Macallan—Sherry. You explore how it shapes each work of art, if you will, from vineyard to glass. Feel like part of the estate as you partake of both the bold drink and the craft it is bottled in; each sip carefully paired with each element.
