As we settle into November, another weekend is finally upon us with a whole host of events to kick off the month in style. Whether you're in the mood for some underground beats, vintage treasures, heartwarming film screenings or others (yep, I ain't listing it all down), we've got you covered with a handpicked list of the best things to do. Here's our guide to making the most of the weekend.

Every weekend—yes, every weekend—there's a new vintage marketplace spot open for you to find your next treasure. Whether its a cute digicam from @digi_cambam and @digicamsg, a visit to a makeshift tent for live tarot readings by @snowielogy, or a curated selection of vintage clothes, hand sculptured accessories and blind bags from @whowantsaynow, @dillydallydally, @woofie.co, @weare_.sg, and @vroomn_vintage, as well as many other hidden gems. So grab your friends or family, and come along to discover what's waiting at Resurrack's Vintage Market.

When: Every Saturday and Sunday, from 3pm-9pm
Where: Resurrack Vintage Market, Bugis Street Art Lane

2. Experience Food From a Three Michelin Star Chef

Red Grouper with Beluga Caviar

JL Studio is not only the first restaurant serving modern Singaporean cuisine to be awarded a Michelin star, it's a restaurant that's been crowned with a Michelin star three times. Based in Taiwan, it's no fault of yours if you haven't had the chance to dine at JL Studios. But here's the next best thing: Chef-Founder Jimmy Lim is coming home this weekend to collaborate with Chef Alan Chan of Cassia at Capella Singapore.

This rare four-seating event will showcase a creative fusion of Cantonese cuisine elevated with premium Taiwanese ingredients, but don't be surprised if you taste some local flavours sprinkled in. The specially curated menu features standout dishes like the Maine Lobster in Pumpkin Broth, Braised Wagyu Beef Rib, and a clever reimagining of chicken rice in the form of Red Grouper with Beluga Caviar. Yeah, it's going to be an experience to say the least.

Where: Cassia, Capella Singapore, 1 The Knolls, Sentosa Island, Singapore 098297

Beyond book launches and panel discussions, the festival offers a vibrant mix of activities that'll even get the kids going. Listen to Geronimo Stilton himself (yes, the suit-wearing mouse) wax literature from his novels at Victoria Theatre, join workshops on crafting crime stories or making zines, and dive into drawing battles with fellow creatives. But all that’s just the beginning—explore the full lineup and see what’s in store for yourself here.

4. Catch All the Long Nights at Mental Health Film Festival Singapore

(ALL THE LONG NIGHTS)

Singapore's Mental Health Film Festival invites us to delve into the often-overlooked struggles of mental health with a captivating array of films. Among the standout selection is All the Long Nights, a poignant Japanese film that explores the complex bond between two individuals facing mental health challenges. Misa (Mone Kamishiraishi), who suffers from extreme premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and Takatoshi (Hokuto Matsumura), who grapples with panic disorder, develop a touching platonic connection as they navigate their personal struggles.

While these conditions may often be dismissed as trivial, the film uncovers their deeper impact—highlighting the importance of understanding and empathy. After the screening, stay for an insightful panel discussion featuring industry professionals and individuals with lived experiences, designed to foster meaningful conversations and promote greater empathy towards mental health.

1-3 November

Here's a gentle nudge: it's nearly time to start reflecting and brainstorming New Year's resolutions for 2025. It's hard to believe but yep, it's November—the year's practically wrapped up. Not the biggest fan of New Year's resolutions myself, I'd prefer to take a step back and jot down areas for improvement. But if you're more of the traditional sort, you probably should get started on it. Alright, I'll spare you any more nagging and get straight to the good stuff. Another weekend, another list of exciting things to check out.

To be precise, the celebration will be hosted at Chimichanga, the lively Mexican bar and restaurant, in honour of Día de los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead. And with DJ LTLX, Alex, Mako, Sivanesh and Vanan M on the decks, you can be sure it'll be an unforgettable night. So come along and strut the dance floor.

3. Check out The Substance

(THE SUBSTANCE)

If you're looking for something thought-provoking this weekend, this might be it. The Substance by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat offers a gripping dive into ambition, vulnerability and the social pressures shaping our lives. Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, this isn't just entertainment; it's an intense, emotionally resonant experience that feels both personal and universal. Carolie's direction brings each character's journey to life with personal performances and stunning cinematography, making it hard to look away. Not to hype it up too much but just saying, this could be my favourite film all-year-long.

I won't spoil too much so I'll just leave you on a cliff-hanger. The Substance explores the choices we make, leaving viewers with plenty to reflect on, and probably grossed out too—in a good way, of course. So don't miss it—this film will linger with you long after the credits roll (it's still lingering after watching it last week.)

1. Experience SG's First Underground Horror House

It’s time to start getting your feet wet for Halloween, so why not get it wet at Singapore’s first and only horror house to be hosted fully underground. Located in the former Far East Command Centre under Fort Canning, the bunker spans 12,000 square feet and will transform into a World War II-themed nightmare. Here’s the story: set in 1942, British army officers turn to an ancient summoning book as a desperate last attempt at defending themselves against the Japanese army. This, of course, unleashes demons, setting the stage for your adventure. Your job is to work with strangers in a group of 8 to 9 people to navigate the underground labyrinth and collect eight hidden cards, subduing the demon.

What truly sets Underground: The Summoning apart from the typical horror houses is its commitment to immersion. Not only is the experience much more substantial, being 45 minutes long, it also takes place in a genuine military bunker, creating an atmosphere no artificial set could replicate. The lighting is carefully managed and you’re placed in unique scenarios that go beyond simple jumpscares. I won’t divulge too much, but if you make it to the end, there’s a neat little gimmick that’ll really catch you off guard.

2. Try Shake Shack's New Zi Char burger

(SHAKE SHACK)

Shake Shack has just raised the stakes. The American burger chain is partnering with Keng Eng Kee (KEK) Seafood (yes, that hawker stall with Michelin recognition) to deliver a series of items that truly blend East with West. The flavours of Zi Char—Singapore’s essential soul food—is manifested in the Coffee-glazed Chicken sandwich, featuring that sweet smoky glaze we’re so used to. It also comes in bite-sized form with the Coffee-glazed Chicken Bites.

The White Pepper Burger pays homage to KEK's legendary White Pepper Crab. The burger is flavoured with caramelised onions, scallions, and a robust white pepper sauce. The result is a flavour profile that’s oddly reminiscent of the top layer of a traditional porridge (AKA the best part). And because no fast food meal is complete without fries, there are also White Pepper Fries to boot. To wash it all down, the tangy Buah Long Long Lemonade and indulgent Raspberry Bandung Shake are sure to satisfy.

1. Watch An Akira Kurosawa Film In Theatres

Seven Samurai

The Singapore Film Society has brought the Japanese Film Festival to Singapore and they’ve curated a series of beginner-friendly Kurosawa films that will play at The Projector. Look out for classics like Seven Samurai, Rashomon and Ikiru.

Watching an old film in the quiet, unhurried environment of a cinema—especially one that’s black and white—is a completely different experience from streaming it on your dusty desktop screen. It feels only right to experience Kurosawa’s film the way he intended, don’t you think?

A plethora of other Japanese films like Crazy Thunder Road, Come on Girls! and Deaths in Tokimeki will also be available at Oldham Theatre and Shaw Lido. They’re more obscure, but there’s nothing quite like stumbling upon a hidden gem.
