The paradox of the coin is where John Varvatos is finding itself at—where two opposing sides can find equanimity. Like appealing to attendees at a mosh pit and a members’ club alike. Like giving vibes of rebellion and refinement, leather and plaid. And that paradox takes form in Artisan Forest, the brand’s new EDT.
This is a fragrance that grounds you in a verdant calm, while stoking that yen for adventure. The accord starts with a starburst of energy, thanks to the fig leaf, rosemary, galbanum resin and tangelo. Then, it slides into the cool shadow of unknowable eldritch named ingredients—black smyrna fig, buchu leaf, and artemisia. It's like a languid trek through undergrowth.
Vetiver, patchouli and warm cedarwood bring up the rear with solid, familiar notes. Ambermax may be a synthetic fragrance ingredient but it stands on its own for its strength and remarkable longevity.
Artisan Forest does well in balancing the senses. The cherry on the top? A woven packaging that leans closely to the looks of its Artisan and Artisan Acqua predecessors. This exterior is inspired by the raw naturalness of the forest and the rich tones of nature itself, with a wrapped green bottle topped with a wooden cap.
For an eau de toilette, one can expect a moderate projection that sits close to the skin for the first hour. Its longevity should be serviceable through a day with reapplication if needed for the evening. As we’ve said, there is a paradox of the coin—like day and night, yin and yang, it’s all the parts, as diverse as they may come—that are essential in making up the whole.
