The hallmark of Louis Vuitton’s New Formal collections is, as its name suggests, the Maison’s constantly updated proposals of formal dress. Under creative director Pharrell Williams, the pieces within the collection have been gradually shaped to be more in line with the main ready-to-wear offerings. Read: sleek, cross-cultural, and embellished with finery.
With tailoring at its core, the New Formal collection is a showcase of Louis Vuitton’s skill in the highly technical arena. The cuts are undoubtedly modern with a slim profile that hits just right, while the designs push the envelope of what formalwear can be with dynamic techniques and stylistic choices. The latest New Formal collection carries through the idea, and this time, emphasises on an evening portion that’s seriously outstanding.
There’s no doubt that these evening pieces are made to stand out. Sure, Louis Vuitton didn’t leave out those of us who would rather stick to the classics such as a single-breasted tuxedo. But here, it’s cut from a tone-on-tone Monogram Wildflowers wool jacquard for a textured finish that’s visible upon close inspection—conventional but with that subtle Williams flair. At the other end of the spectrum are more outré pieces that’ll command attention as you enter a room. A collarless tweed jacket (a silhouette that has quickly become a Williams-signature for Louis Vuitton) is awash with sequins that seem to capture light at every angles, and finished with rhinestone-embellished buttons. A white shirt too isn’t just any white shirt; a crisp, white cotton piece is punctuated with a collar decorated with pearlescent breads of different sizes intricately arranged to create a 3D Damier effect.
The introduction of a number of more casual-leaning pieces exemplify the Maison’s prowess in hybridising garments, elevating them for more formal pursuits. A crewneck sweater, for example, is made more evening-appropriate with black pearly beads embellished all over and makes for an elegant proposal when layered over a white shirt worn with a tie. And for a more contemporary take on an evening jacket, a zippered blouson is fitted with impeccable piped pockets and thoroughly embellished with a herringbone motif that recalls more traditional suiting fabrics. Stunning.
We have been seeing a lot more ostentatious stylings from men on red carpets of late. And with these Louis Vuitton New Formal pieces available, there’s little excuse to just slap on any black tuxedo and call it a night. It’s time to embrace the new new.
