Sinners set a new record for the most Oscar nominations in history, collecting 16 nods that include Best Picture, Best Director for filmmaker Ryan Coogler, and Best Actor for Michael B Jordan’s dual role as twins who face down an onslaught of undead evil in the Jim Crow south. One Battle After AnotherSentimental Value, and Marty Supreme and Frankenstein also racked up multiple nominations Thursday as the Academy Award contenders were announced in a pre-dawn presentation.

Sinners has topped previous record-holders All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016), which tallied fourteen nominations each. The film blended the supernatural with uplifting music history and the heart-wrenching legacy of racism, becoming both a box-office blockbuster and a critical favourite as well. Its sheer volume of recognised categories makes Sinners the undisputed frontrunner when the winners are revealed 15 March.

One Battle After Another was right behind it with 13 nods, while FrankensteinMarty SupremeSentimental Value each had nine nominations. Hamnet was next on the list with eight.
