I’ll admit, the last time holding a golf club was probably at a mini golf course shaped like dinosaurs. So I was relieved that walking into GreenBox at Downtown East felt less like stepping onto a fairway and more like entering a video game arcade.
GreenBox is one of two new venues (the other one tucked away at Orchid Country Club), spanning across 9,500 square feet, launched in collaboration with E Golfing, Golfzon, and the Singapore Golf Association. While the clubs and swings are real, the experience feels like a sharp left turn from the traditions of country clubs and dress codes.
For starters, you don’t need to own a set of clubs, commit to four hours outdoors, or know the difference between a seven iron and a pitching wedge. With that, I started in one of the private virtual golf rooms equipped with Golfzon’s TwoVision NX system, which is every bit as futuristic as it sounds.
The simulator doesn’t just display a course on screen, it reacts to it in a way no other virtual golf has before. The floor tilts beneath your feet to match the slope of your lie, the hitting mats mimic different terrains from fairway to bunker, and the sensors pick up everything from swing speed to foot pressure.
My first few shots were …humbling, but the immediate data feedback helped me adjust quickly. After a while, I wasn’t just swinging for the sake of it; I was watching how the ball curved, how my stance changed my accuracy, and where my weight shifted during each attempt.
And while I wasn’t there to compete, I did get a glimpse into GreenBox’s competitive edge. The Golfzon tech allows for real time gameplay across different bays, venues, and even countries such as Japan, Korea and US. GreenBox has made a real effort to open up the game, not just for seasoned players, but for people who never thought they’d belong on a golf course.
Unlike a real course, there’s no need to commit to a half day of play. A solo golfer can zip through 18 holes in 45 minutes. A group of four can wrap up in three to four hours with no sunburn. Plus, no long walks in between the holes.
GreenBox offers coaching with Singapore Professional Golfers’ Association certified coaches from MGK Academy. Lessons start at SGD120 per person for an hour, and MGK members get 20 per cent off.
Screen to Green package encompassing 10 hour long lessons, MGK membership, proficiency certification, and use of equipment cater to those looking to fully commit. Starting at SGD1,200 for individuals, or SGD700 per person for groups of four.
By the end of the visit, my arms were tired, my swing ever so slightly better, and my idea of golf? Completely changed. What used to feel like a sport gated behind tradition and exclusivity now felt like something closer to bowling night.
