Jason Bateman and Netflix make a great team. Not only did the two bring back Arrested Development and turn Bateman into a genuinely compelling action-movie villain in Carry-On. They created Ozark—the simmering crime drama that collected tons of Emmys during its four-season run. Soon, Bateman and Netflix may make lightning strike thrice (!) with a whole new show: Black Rabbit.
At Netflix's Upfront presentation to advertisers in New York, the streamer began the event with a look at Black Rabbit. Bateman's newest project will be premiering later in 2025. The limited series follows two estranged brothers, Vince and Jake Friedken (Bateman and Jude Law, respectively), who reunite in the New York City nightlife scene and tangle up in underworld crime.
A crime thriller with heaping doses of comedy, Black Rabbit is coming across like Ozark if it were made by the Coen Brothers at their zaniest. (Black Rabbit's actual creators are Kate Susman and Zach Baylin, whose combined credits include King Richard, Creed III, and The Order.)
Speaking of Ozark, Black Rabbit is shaping up to be a partial reunion of sorts. Laura Linney is tapping in to direct episodes 3 and 4, while Ozark director Ben Semanoff will helm episodes 5 and 6. Bateman himself is on duty for the first two episodes, with movie director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, Assassin's Creed) overseeing episodes 7 and 8.
There's still plenty more to discover with Black Rabbit, with a more robust cast list posted by Netflix's Tudum back in May 2024. If Bateman's track record with Netflix is any indication, Black Rabbit just might be the next show to eclipse our streaming queues.
