If you’ve harboured the romantic notion of owning your own cask of Scotch, then the Artisanal Spirits Company has just dangled the ultimate temptation.
They call it Artisan Casks. It’s a new private cask programme, but “programme” feels... anodyne for what it is. Artisan Casks is an invitation into an inner circle, where whiskies (aged at least 20 years old and above) are up for the taking. These hogsheads are already at a quality fit for bottling that has the potential to evolve further under the eye of the company’s whisky-makers.
And what sharp eyes they have. The Artisanal Spirits Company has amassed one of the most enviable inventories in the industry—over 100 distilleries represented, with provenance that could illicit an intake of breath from a lush. Only a handful are released each year at Artisan Casks and this year’s roll call include a Macallan 1993; Bowmore 2004; Laphroaig 1998; Mortlach 1991.
Artisans Casks' recent Asia debut was held at The Presidential Villa at Raffles Sentosa. Prior to that its global launch took place on a 125-year-old sailing yacht in Monaco.
At the helm is James Mackay, the company’s Private Client Director. Mackay comes with three decades of experience in rare whisky and fine spirits, including nearly a decade running Diageo’s Rare & Exceptional Spirits arm. There's no better person than Mackay to front Artisan Casks.
"The Artisan Casks programme brings together everything that makes single malt Scotch whisky so special to me," Mackay says. "The most authentic, time-honoured application of craft, with each cask the focus of years of technical artistry, patience and uncompromising attention to detail.
“With its pedigree, expertise and outstanding cask inventory, the Artisanal Spirits Company is uniquely placed to offer individuals access to this world. Becoming the owner of such a cask is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, one that I can't wait to share and celebrate with like-minded souls around the world.”
Members are inducted into a select network of collectors and enthusiasts, with privileged access to distilleries, bottlings, and private events. Each cask gets its own custodian—someone who understands that great whisky isn’t just made; it’s made and kept.
