On Monday, Apple did something unexpected. The company, known for its splashy press-conference reveals for every new iPhone and Mac, just straight-up announced a new product without any fanfare. Say hello to the new and improved AirTags.
In 2021, Apple more or less introduced to the world to the concept of the "item finder" with the AirTag. What started as a way to make sure your luggage wasn't getting lost or stolen has become a must-have for some. There are AirTags in our wallets, in our passport holders, and on our keychains. Frankly, most of us won't fly without them anymore. If that includes you, listen up.
You can purchase the second-generation model of AirTag and it's the same price as the old one—you can still get one for SGD45 or a bundle of four for SGD149. But how, you may be asking, the hell are these new ones any different?
We haven't got our hands on them, but the new AirTags will be louder and more powerful than the original. In terms of sound, the new model is 50 per cent louder than the first-gen device and features a "distinctive new chime" that aims to make it easier for all users to hear. Apple also states that the second generation of its item finder has larger Bluetooth range, citing improvements to Precision Finding that lets you find items up to 50 per cent farther away than the original AirTag does. Essentially, it does the same thing, just a little bit better. Good for all the AirTags you buy going forward.
Given the pricing—which, again, is the same as the last generation's—this is likely a replacement in the long term. We imagine that within a year the first generation of AirTags will be fully replaced. Here's to the new AirTag.
