Philadelphia-based artist Jonathan Lyndon Chase has brought his signature maximalist style to an ongoing collaboration with Acne Studios. Known for emotionally charged figurative paintings and plush sculptures, Chase draws inspiration from the everyday. His creative process often begins with a sketch, much like many fashion designers. From there, ideas ripple outward, evolving into immersive, multidimensional works.
Chase's first brush with Acne Studios was during Paris Fashion Week where he created the set design for the Spring/Summer 2025 womenswear show. It was a reimagining of a domestic interior through the lens of Chase's expressive, intuitive style—blending soft sculpture, furniture, and painting into a surreal living space. Playful interpretations of everyday objects like lamps, sinks, cabinets, fans, and picture frames transformed the runway into a lived-in, emotionally rich environment that reflected themes of Black identity, queerness, and intimate domesticity.
The partnership has since evolved into a bold capsule collection and exhibition timed to coincide with Frieze New York 2025. Exploring themes of emotion and the body, and how they shape the spaces around us, the project blurs the lines between fashion and contemporary art. From 7 to 11 May, Acne Studios Greene Street was transformed into a temporary exhibition space, showcasing an eclectic mix of works by the American artist—including pieces from the original set design and new creations made exclusively for the occasion.
The exhibition launched alongside the Acne Studios Loves Jonathan Lyndon Chase capsule collection, featuring the expressive illustrations across clothing and homeware. Reimagined ‘1981’ jeans, T-shirts, and soft furnishings evoke feelings of intimacy and emotion; denim-inspired fabrics nod to Acne Studios’ roots, while cushions and a blanket quietly echo themes of tenderness. Chase incorporates fabrics that echo the look of denim and, in turn, draws from the collection’s material language. Responding to its rich palette—particularly the use of denim and satin—these textiles became the very canvas for several of the exhibition’s paintings.
Chase's practice moves between tenderness and provocation, intimacy and universality—tensions explored with deliberate intent. At its heart, the work centers on humanity, ownership of the body, love, and sexuality. "It's super important right now to live unapologetically," Chase states. What captivated him most is the full spectrum of domestic life—the ups, the downs, the lows, the friendly, the romantic—all of it.
The Acne Studios Loves Jonathan Lyndon Chase collection is available exclusively at Acne Studios Greene Street in New York, and will launch in select stores worldwide as well as online at acnestudios.com from late June 2025.
