When Thomas Burberry invented gabardine and later patented it in 1888, it was a revolution. Before gabardine, weatherproof fabrics—treated with either wax or rubber—were weighty, rigid, and as a result, uncomfortable to wear. Gabardine was the ultimate solution with its tightly woven construction that offers a lighter and more flexible fabric, becoming the foundation of Burberry's signature outerwear. From the Tielocken to its emblematic trench coat, Burberry's outerwear quickly transcended its military origins to protect wearers against unpredictable British weather, right up to present day.
2026 marks Burberry's 170th anniversary. And with that, the House has chosen to celebrate one of the facets that has made it a household name: its dependable outerwear.

To commemorate the milestone, Burberry enlisted photographer Jack Day to document 170 individuals, each wearing a Burberry outerwear in their own way. Called 170: The Anniversary Portraits, the latest campaign features individuals across London, New York, Seoul and Shanghai interpreting 10 Burberry outerwear, framed by the familiar streets they call home. Locals were cast alongside creatives and talents from the worlds of art, literature, music, and sports, as well as Burberry's own employees—paying homage to those who have, and continue to shape Burberry. The campaign itself is a nod to Burberry's previous campaign, Art of the Trench, that was launched in 2009 to highlight the versatility of the Burberry trench. A complementary film, 170: The Anniversary Portraits, was directed by Hector Aponysus.
"For 170 years, our outerwear has adapted to the weather and the way we dress. Each portrait is different, but together they capture individuality and self-expression," says Burberry chief creative officer, Daniel Lee. The 10 outerwear featured in the campaign take on different silhouettes and fabrics. The Mid-length Camden Heritage Car Coat, for example, is part of Burberry's Heritage collection, defined by its single-breasted cut, with concealed buttons, neat collar and button-tab cuffs. The Mid-length Hastings Trench Coat is a more refined version of the original, crafted in gently brushed cashmere that's lightweight and fluid.

Contemporary outerwear continue to be refined by Burberry. The Check Highlands Puffer Jacket comes in a glossy nylon that feels very much made for the streets, and is designed with a protective funnel neck. Burberry's House Check is directly woven into the fabric in a tasteful tonal treatment. For lighter options, quilted jackets inspired by the British countryside, are positioned as perfect transitional styles. The Reversible Quilted Nylon Brighton Overshirt is rendered in a shale-green nylon that's both lightweight and reversible to reveal the House Check.
