Walton Goggins May Have Had a Hand in Spain's World Cup Win

We're just joshing you, of course. But then again, Walton Goggins' RIMOWA short film featuring the brand's Dartboard Case was shot well before the World Cup finals... so, maybe?

You would think that someone as widely regarded and respected as one of the greatest actors of our time, Walton Goggins strives for perfection in any given role. But as he tells us, he's not quite a perfectionist. "I believe in giving everything you have to everything you do. That’s different than perfection… It’s commitment. Perfection doesn’t exist… it’s certainly not universally recognised, but commitment is. That’s really the only thing we have control over," he explains.

Commitment. We reckon it's probably why RIMOWA chose Goggins to bring its latest campaign to life. Because only an actor with the breadth of portraying the easy-to-hate Billy Crash in Django Unchained to the complex Rick Hatchett in season three of The White Lotus, could convey emotion in a short film with essentially zero dialogue. It feels completely true to RIMOWA—a commitment to designing timeless products with such precise engineering and using innovative materials, that the results speak for themselves.

Goggins portrays a RIMOWA security guard on his Sunday shift at the brand's historic Cologne factory. It's a quiet shift, and he's multitasking, taking the opportunity to catch his football team's match. The team's not doing so well and he's restless. He goes on his rounds while still keeping tabs of the match's progress. Eventually, he stumbles upon an aluminium case with a dartboard inside. He mounts it, and to take his mind off of the tension of the match, proceeds to play a game of darts. It then becomes a battle of wills—if he hits the bullseye, his team will be victorious. He does.

The RIMOWA Dartboard Case is every bit what you'd expect of the brand. From the exterior, the design is instantly recognisable with the signature grooves on high-end anodised aluminium. The case is developed with the expertise of Winmau, the industry leader in professional darts equipment and official supplier to the Professional Darts Corporation. It's this commitment to ensuring that the Dartboard Case is crafted in accordance to proper, professional-level equipment that makes the difference.

As shown in the film, the Dartboard Case is easily mountable and opens up to form your very own mobile dartboard. The Winmau Blade X dartboard sits on a premium black microfibre interior, flanked by the compartment doors that each houses a professional grade dart set, with three darts per side. Naturally, the darts too are specifically crafted to reflect the design aesthetic of the set. The shaft of each dart is in black and RIMOWA-branded, while the red and green flights are adorned with its monogram. A leather pouch is included too as a form of protection and ease of transport for the darts.

"I grew up playing darts—in basements with my friends as a kid, to pubs with my friends as an adult. I love everything about the game," Goggins tells us. He seems pretty committed to RIMOWA too and has deep respect for the brand as we learnt, one that has grown since being part of this campaign.

ESQUIRE SINGAPORE: You mentioned in a prior interview that you were introduced to RIMOWA through a fellow actor. I’m curious to know how your own personal RIMOWA looks like now? Are you one to personalise it with stickers and such?

WALTON GOGGINS: An actress I was working with on a job had a RIMOWA Classic Cabin. We travelled together to three different countries while filming and I saw the deep connection she had with this luggage. I could see it in her countenance as she effortlessly moved through the airports, hopping into van after van, and I thought one day I’ll have that carry-on as well. I do indeed own that luggage and I have a similar relationship with it.

Most things in my life are clean… clean lines and all the rest. If there is clutter, it’s with intention. I do enjoy seeing a RIMOWA luggage covered with stickers from countries that the owner has visited, a visual road map as a reminder of so many people, places and things… experiences. I’m the kind of guy that doesn’t need those visual reminders. All of my experiences on the road are right below the surface. The only modification I made to my carry-on is a brown handle.

ESQ: How has your relationship with the brand evolved since owning that very first piece of RIMOWA?

WG: My relationship with the brand has evolved from being an outside admirer of their pieces, to being deep on the inside. A user. Someone who benefits from the ease and elegance of rolling their luggage through an airport. Being invited to collaborate with RIMOWA on this campaign, being given the privilege of spending time in the RIMOWA factory where they’re made has only deepened that connection. I now understand how this luggage is made and have met a few of the people responsible for making it.

ESQ: From this experience, is there something that you were very surprised to learn about RIMOWA that you perhaps weren’t aware of before?

WG: I had the opportunity of visiting the archive room at the RIMOWA factory in Cologne. It was a firsthand look at how the luggage have evolved over time. I was so taken with how the needs of generations and their modes of travel changed over time and how RIMOWA modified and accommodated those changes. It was really special to see it all in one place.

ESQ: What was your approach like for this RIMOWA campaign?

WG: When I got the call that RIMOWA wanted me to collaborate with them on a campaign it was a bit overwhelming. As a company they don’t do this very often. I knew what an honour it was to be given this invitation. Then when I read the story they wanted to tell... I couldn’t stop smiling. They wanted to make a European art film in 60 seconds. I couldn’t contain my excitement. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had in this format.

ESQ: Having acted in a number of different projects spanning film, television, music videos, and campaigns such as this, is the mental preparation more or less the same, or does it vary?

WG: It’s always the same. Read the script 250 times and turn yourself over to an imaginary set of circumstances.

ESQ: In the campaign, the game of darts becomes like a potential lucky charm for the team you’re rooting for. Are you a real-life believer in match day superstitions?

WG: I believe we all have superstitions surrounding many things in our lives. Some conscious, some subconscious. So yes, there are rituals that I adhere to everyday before I begin work or watch my favourite team play a game. After this campaign, I’ll have a new one… DARTS!!

ESQ: If you were to custom a RIMOWA piece for yourself, what would that look like?

WG: Exactly what I have: a Classic Cabin with black wheels and a brown handle.

ESQ: It’s probably the best time to be a sports fan this year with the FIFA World Cup taking over the world this past few weeks. Was there a particular team that you were rooting for to take the cup home?

WG: I’m American so of course I was pulling for my home team. But my close second team was a country that I’ve spent four months working in this year: SPAIN. That’s who I was thinking about when I threw that dart while filming the campaign. It all worked out.
