It’s time to come clean about my pretensions. I am that millennial that seeks off-the-beaten-paths for the misplaced sense of superiority from doing a little more research than asking an AI chatbot to plan my vacation. It’s why I’ve only traversed Southeast Asia’s top holiday destinations for work, and at point of writing, still have not been to Kuala Lumpur.
All that humble bragging to set the scene for one of the latest island resorts launching under the Westin umbrella. The collection synonymous with wellness under Marriott’s extensive portfolio finds a perfect match in the private coast actually close to our shores. A stone’s throw away, if the stone was a 45-minute direct ferry ride from Singapore.
Since we’re one-way trading travel stories, I’ve once had the privilege of visiting one of the most unique private island accommodations off Bintan. I still daydream about it
seven years on. My sole gripe was the convoluted half-day expedition getting there.
So Nirup has already earned rent-free brain space for the sheer convenience. Of course, a return trip is not granted by convenience alone. There’s the panoramic view of islands dotting the surrounding sea. Warm Indonesia hospitality that is frankly unrivalled in the region. All the standards and services one would expect from a luxury stay.
Beyond these top-of-mind notes, we can zoom in on the details. Villas aside, the main suites are either sunrise or sunset facing in two parallel three-level blocks. The layout might bring academic architecture to mind, but that fades upon crossing the threshold.

The balanced use of woody tones makes the room feel more home than hotel. The bathroom divider, if you enjoy having natural light filter into your shower area. An elegant towel rack on the balcony, I’m almost embarrassed to mention, that allows you to harness the elements in a way that isn’t jarring to the place.
I’d be remiss if I fail to mention Westin’s signature Heavenly ® Bed. Sleep Well is one of the brand’s pillars, so this customised forty winks machine is a staple across all Westin properties. Recently opened Nirup has the honour of hosting the newest version. If you fall in love with it as much as I did, you can purchase one from the Westin store along with the signature bedside Lavender Balm. That’s how seriously they take your snooze.

The next spot you’ll likely spend the most time at is all-day dining Island Kitchen. The breezy hall models after a ship; expressed by the deck-like patio, expansive views and most keenly, when you look up. Constellate Pool Bar is the best lookout point for a distinct, unblocked Singapore skyline, while you find peak beach club vibes at Salt Simply Seafood.
What’s more impressive than the Heavenly Spa (props for consistent branding) is the
WestinWORKOUT ® Fitness Studio. Sure, most luxury gyms these days are fitted with Technogym’s finest. How many are optimised with TRX, Hyperice massage guns and practically all the pilates equipment save for a reformer?
Now, if you’re hopping by Batam since it’s just another half hour ferry away, Batam Marriott Hotel Harbour Bay further pushes the convenience agenda by being situated literally above the terminal. It’s admittedly sheltered away from the rest of the island’s reality, but it’s where to continue a stylish stay.
When you return from either back to Harbourfront terminal, the Singaporean penchant for efficiency i.e. saving a great deal of time and hassle while maximising respite, is more than satisfied.
