Balenciaga and Puma's High Fashion Pit Stop

In a crowded streetwear scene, Balenciaga x PUMA offers a rare fresh perspective
Published: 18 July 2025

Balenciaga and Puma's latest collaboration is a collision of motorsport nostalgia and deliberate luxury deconstruction that feels less like a product and more like an artful provocation. First teased on Balenciaga’s Autumn/Winter 2025 runway, the collaboration isn’t just a case of slapping a logo onto a trainer and calling it a day. It’s a full-throttle reinvention of Puma's legacy.

To fully appreciate the spirit of the collaboration, look no further than its campaign visuals shot by Dutch photographer Ari Versluis. The campaign features models in tracksuits and Speedcats performing gabber, a hyper-aggressive dance born from the Netherlands’ underground rave scene. Their sharp, stomping movements are juxtaposed against the dreamy French pop of Françoise Hardy’s “Tous Les Garçons et Les Filles.”

The Speedcat silhouette needs no introduction to those familiar with Puma's motorsport heritage. With its streamlined form and racing pedigree, the Speedcat first made its mark in 1998, earning a loyal following among both sneakerheads and professional drivers. Now, in the hands of Balenciaga, it’s been reimagined into something stranger and unexpectedly beautiful: a laceless, almost sock-like form with its classic suede swapped for satin. In an era dominated by chunky soles and over-the-top sneaker releases, the use of satin feels intentional. It’s elevated further by four elegant colourways: pastel pink, baby blue, deep black, and a sharp black-and-white contrast.

Alongside the Speedcat Ballerina is the Speedcat Ultrasoft that's crafted in suede and stripped-back leather, complete with artfully “destroyed” uppers and a severed Puma Formstrip. The colourways are just as bold as the design itself: scarlet red, deep navy, inky black, two-tone black and white, rich brown, a punchy yellow, soft baby pink, clean white, and even sleek black-and-white leather.

The rest of the collection dives headfirst into the world of classic training kits and trackside staples. From sharp nylon tracksuits laced with Puma's archival detailing from the '90s to a shearling “tracksuit” jacket and a trompe-l’œil suede bathrobe coat lined with plush reverse molleton, the ready-to-wear presents a bold fusion of athletic codes and luxury. The more everyday pieces—hoodies, tees, and shorts—are all branded with Balenciaga x Puma graphics.
