In the latest episode of Esquire Freeze Frame, Robert De Niro breaks down scenes from Zero Day, Netflix’s much-anticipated thriller series, alongside the show’s co-creator Eric Newman

It tells the story of former president—George Mullen (De Niro, in his first major TV role)—who is reluctantly pulled back into the White House hot seat after a devastating cyber-attack unleashes chaos upon the America’s essential infrastructure. Before long, it becomes apparent that there’s a grand conspiracy at play.

In the interview, the pair talk about the unique pressures of filming a TV show—De Niro recently said that it’s “like doing three features back-to-back”—as well as the importance of the show’s message in our current political climate.

“There were things, I can remember from that first conversation, that were important to Bob,” says Newman of the creative process. “Things that he wanted to say in a show, and I think we said them.”

Zero Day is streaming now on Netflix.
