Singapore is a city-state that is built on ideals and fuelled by ambition. Sixty years of toil and sufficiency led the Little Red Dot to the economic powerhouse. Although there are scant brands that have travelled alongside Singapore's journey, none comes close than Martell, whose first cognac shipment arrived on our shores in 1871. Since then, it has been a staple at Chinese New Years, weddings and other celebratory occasions.
As our Little Red Dot marks its 60th National Day, the oldest of the great Cognac Houses created a tribute as uncommon as our nation’s own ascent: limited-edition cognacs so rare that only 12 bottles are produced.
Each decanter consists of an assemblage of eaux-de-vie (French for the "waters of life") that are aged for over six decades. Matured in fine-grained oak casks that are drawn from the exclusive Founder’s Reserve, the entire process is kept under the watchful eye of Martell's Cellar Master Christophe Valtaud.
“In crafting this cognac," Valtaud explains, "I sought to create a blend as emblematic as Singapore can be. It has a unique power worthy of the finest and rarest eaux-de-vie from the Founder's Reserve, and above all, with that characteristic historic cellar signature, that only old eaux-de-vie that have spent over 60 years in our cellars can express.”
Said cellar is the renowned confines at the historic Gâtebourse site. Founded by Jean Martell, the cellar is key in creating a richer, smoother, and rounder flavour profile.
To complement the cognac, the decanter's final form is likened to an objet d’art. Taking inspiration from our national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim, the bottle is forged from Baccarat crystal with a design emblazoned with a motif of snaking intertwining vines and grapes.
It is a statement piece, one that is cradled in a refined oak wood. With a seemingly-innocuous exterior, the inside doors are accented with an engraved gold-toned metal; evoking Singapore's modern elegance and Maison Martell's timeless artistry.
Alas, due to its dearth, the 12-bottle release is only available to members of Le Cercle, Pernod Ricard's private client group. To inquire and/or purchase, visit the Le Cercle website.
