In the cinematic epoch of superhero movies, we see the least cookie-cutter type hero all fired up to save the world—and possibly prove itself. Not only does it have big shoes to fill following Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman’s popular rendition, its release is sandwiched between DC Shazam and Marvel Avengers Endgame.
And while it is usually annoying to have the trailer clue in the entire movie plot, this one actually does whet our appetite. You see Hellboy, played by David Harbour of Stranger Things (which seemed a weird fit at first, but after a splash of red paint and a bucketful of great acting works really well), on horseback, wrestling Resident Evil scale monsters, and emerging with a crown of fire to match his sword.
The mature rating of the film sets the stage for more gore, but the premise of Harbour’s Hellboy seems a lot lighter. Our only question is: Jovovich’s Blood Queen method of ending lives seems eerily familiar to Thanos’, so what’s it with villains and fading people to dust?
Hellboy is slated to be released on April 12.
