Night owls and art aficionados, block out two weekends in August. After much anticipation, detailed information of Singapore Night Festival 2018 has been revealed.
The theme for this year’s Singapore Night Festival 2018 is Bring on the Night—a line-up of installations and performances that focuses on new creativity. Spotlights will be on people from different disciplines and backgrounds—including those outside the arts sectors—gathering to create and collaborate.
Heading into its 11th edition, Singapore Night Festival has always been well-received by the masses—measured by the past successes of massive turnouts from previous years. Eager to know the key attractions around the Bras Basah and Bugis precinct? You’ll be in for a surprise with the appearance of many never-before-seen multidisciplinary talents who’ll showcase their craft across various platforms.
This year’s Night Lights features 16 captivating light installations by both local and international artists planted at various spaces within Singapore’s arts and heritage district. ‘The Leap of Faith’, created by Singaporean accountant turned visual artist Teng Kai Wei, is a honeycomb-inspired installation that’s parallel to Teng’s courageous journey on leaving a familiar office environment and taking the plunge to be a full-time artist. Reflecting on how the support of a close-knitted community enriches individual experiences, words of encouragement will light up upon interactivity from the public.
Grooming the next generation of Singapore creatives is one of the Singapore Night Festival’s agenda. Through SNF Open Call, the festival received its highest number of public entries yet, of which five became part of this year’s Night Lights line-up.
Pop by ‘Light Wave’, a visual manifestation of wave energy transmission made by first-time participants Max Lab. The Singapore-based lighting design and technology company encourage us to rethink our perspectives on lighting by moving and twisting a series of suspended light rods to create waves of dynamic lighting that flow across the tranquil water surface of the Reflection Pool above Bras Basah MRT.
Into live action with visual spectaculars? Take your pick from 27 performances that span genres across different art disciplines. Set a reminder to attend ‘Let there be ___’, a performance that integrates art and tech from a collab between local jazz dance troupe EV Dance and local engineering firm Hope Technik. The jazz dancers will don and perform with an ‘Audra Exoskeleton’—a specially designed suit manufactured by Hope Technik to assist workers in lifting heavy weights. Festival goers, get ready to awe at the execution of graceful jazz choreographies through an ‘Ironman’ suit.
Another newcomer to the festival is UK troupe Lords of Lightning. This duel of electrical wizardry harnesses approximately four million volts of electricity and emits lightning bolts into its surroundings—a feat achieved through the fusion of physics and art.
Overwhelmed? Take a breather from the spectrum of activities at the satellite Festival Village at SMU Campus Green. Refuel with food or bask in the melodic sounds produced by local musicians before heading to your next twilight haven at the festival.
