Most visual art exhibitions and performances require almost zero effort from the attendees except cracking their brains to decipher what the artists are trying to express through the specific medium used and walking through many gallery halls (exercise!). For Dawn Ng’s 11, participants will have to read 11 different dialogues or scripts penned by Ng to other individuals who have also signed up for this performance. Want to decode the crux of 11? You’ll have to work your way to it.
Ng is no stranger to the local arts sphere as we have probably encountered the beloved Walter, a guerilla white rabbit who appeared at places like the Singapore Art Museum and River Nights Festival to a commissioned installation to inaugurate Hermès‘ refurbished Singapore flagship store at Liat Towers.
Fresh from her solo showing of Perfect Stranger at Sullivan + Strumpf gallery in Sydney last year, 11 is a performance-meets-social experiment that explores affinity through verbal interaction. Conversations are confined within a confessional booth arranged in a circle and pairs are assigned at random with no words besides the assigned script to each booth are to be uttered.

Without giving major spoilers, participants will get to experience all 11 narratives which provide insight into the personal vignettes of modern Singapore city life in a roundtable format akin to speed dating. Very apt in such contemporary times. I don’t know about you, but assuming and immersing your role in each script are highly encouraged—you’ll get to grasp a seemingly familiar fleeting exchange during a normal encounter magnified tenfolds in this black box performance space at Telok Ayer Arts Club.
Are you able to connect with the appropriate emotions for your role while delivering your lines to a stranger you’ve just encountered? The mandatory stiff cocktail served during the prelude did help tremendously.
’11’—A Performance Piece by Dawn Ng is held at Telok Ayer Arts Club, 2 McCallum Street, Singapore 069043. Tickets are priced at S$48 per pax, which includes a stiff cocktail. Listed public showings are all sold out, but two sessions on 26 January (one at 8.00pm, and a special afternoon matinee at 5.00pm) have been added. Group or corporate bookings of 22 pax can be arranged, depending on the artist’s schedule. Interested parties can inquire via email at email@example.com.
