We like to celebrate (and harp on) the fact that crossing every decade itself is a milestone. It gives us the reason to reflect and commemorate on coming thus far. Popular Swedish furniture retailer IKEA has countless of flagship products—like the POÄNG armchair—that have been mainstays in their showrooms for years. This February, it’s the BILLY’s turn to have a bash for its 40th anniversary.
A household favourite that sold millions over the years, this beloved bookcase will get a limited edition colour in yellow, a first since its launch. This selection offered alongside the current colour choices allows customers to have more permutations with customisations. Using the retailer’s BOTTNA range of add-ons, such as display shelves, inserts and bookends, BILLY’s storage solutions can be beyond books. Think display spaces or organisation options for shoes, audio, and gym equipment.
When BILLY’s designer Gillis Lundgren first designed the iconic bookcase, he envisioned it to be a piece of affordable furniture that appeals to the masses with various types of living spaces. It’s something that’s functional, flexible and modest. BILLY makes a simple yet important statement: ‘Look inside before you define me.’ Lundgren named his design after a colleague, Billy Liljedahl, who had expressed his desire for a “proper” bookcase.
The yellow BILLY bookcase cost S$129 and is now available at all IKEA Singapore stores. For more information, head over to IKEA Singapore’s website.
