Last year, Spa Esprit Group’s Cynthia Chua went on a safari trip to Selinda Camp and Gomoti Plains in Botswana, South Africa. While the excursion led to the usual photos and souvenir purchases, an idea for a café percolated and would be undertaken by the lifestyle giant: a safari-themed Tiong Bahru Bakery.
You won’t see any animals on the prowl, unfortunately, save for the free-range chickens and bunnies at the back of the cafe, but mad props go to Tiong Bahru Bakery for its attention to details in replicating the glamping experience. Particulars like rustic furniture, trunks, Kilim carpets from the Middle East, butterfly taxidermy and industrial air coolers are housed in a huge canvas tent with a seating capacity of 46. There’s even the audio of thunderclaps booming in the restrooms for effect.
In case you’re wondering, TBB Safari, as it’s called, isn’t a pop-up. Permanently taking over a previously under-utilised area of Open Farm Community, the Group’s fifth Tiong Bahru Bakery outlet will, of course, offer its signature croissants, kouign aman, quiches, and other French pastries, alongside an exclusive, health-conscious menu of antioxidant-rich, caffeine-free colourful lattes (with turmeric, beetroot and blue pea harvested from the garden in the back). There are also power breakfast jars infused with Southeast Asian fruits and flavours like papaya, pineapple, rojak flowers, black sesame, pandan, and sago.
TBB Safari is located at 130E Minden Road. Opening hours are from 8am-5pm. Call 6877 4876 for more information.
