We definitely didn’t see this coming. Parisian fashion brand Sandro has collaborated with Helly Hansen for the autumn/winter 2018 season, and produced a capsule collection. While the former is known for its French minimalism and urban aesthetic, Helly Hansen is a rather unfamiliar name among the fashion circuit.
Helly Hansen was founded in 1877 in Oslo, Norway. The brand started out by creating waterproof, oilskin apparel for seamen, and have since expanded its range to include professional outdoor gear to protect against the harsh elements at sea, on the mountains, and at worksites. Helly Hansen is all about protection and making sure that the wearer is able to survive whatever elements he or she is subjected to—a far cry from what fashion essentially is.
Although it might be a surprise that Helly Hansen is collaborating with Sandro, its technical designs were actually favoured by the hip-hop community in the ’90s. Rap greats the likes of Redman and Mobb Deep, sported Helly Hansen-branded outerwear. Even the hip-hop community in Paris got into the brand, with French rappers JoeyStarr and Kool Sheen among the two most prominent ones to popularise Helly Hansen’s puffer jackets. The Sandro x Helly Hansen collaboration doesn’t seem too far off now, does it?
For the Sandro x Helly Hansen capsule collection, Sandro revisits some of the iconic Helly Hansen silhouettes. Think puffer jackets, waterproof parkas, and hoodies that are all emblazoned with the Helly Hansen branding. Of course, as seen in the video and lookbook images above, they’re seamlessly paired with Sandro’s Parisian-chic style—’90s but most definitely elevated.
The Sandro x Helly Hansen capsule collection will be available in mid-September at the Sandro boutique at Marina Bay Sands (B2-108, Canal Level, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands).
