We can only speculate why Daniel Lee—a relative unknown and the former director of ready-to-wear at Céline—was hired as Bottega Veneta's creative director in June 2018. Yet, to take the hire as a move by Kering to fill in the gap that was left by Phoebe Philo's departure from the 'old Céline', seems to discredit Lee's talent. And as proven by his first runway show debut for Bottega Veneta's autumn/winter 2019 collection, the man has got his own vision while respecting the heritage of the Italian fashion house.
It's still quite a wait before we get to experience Lee's rather minimalist ready-to-wear; his first collection to be released would be pre-fall 2019. What's available now, is the Maxi Cabat, an oversized interpretation (both size and pattern) of Bottega Veneta's iconic Intrecciato technique.
Measuring a generous 66cm x 42cm x 16cm, the Maxi Cabat employs the same Intrecciato technique but with enlarged strips of double-faced nappa leather. The Intrecciato versions of the Maxi Cabat is available in full Intrecciato, as well as a variation that's topped with a smooth band of leather at the top. Full leather versions in calf leather and crocodile are available too but it's the distinctive weaving technique and colourful options that best encapsulate Bottega Veneta's new era.
We'd reckon you could fit an entire gym kit in a Maxi Cabat and still have enough space for your other everyday items. But if an oversized bag priced at SGD13,630 is over your budget, here are some other ways to spend that amount.
Three Dior Oblique Book Totes by Dior (SGD3,500 each)
A truly unisex bag (Dior Men's artistic director Kim Jones has been spotted with one), the Dior Oblique Book Tote might not be as massive as Bottega Veneta's Maxi Cabat, but imagine this with your brand new Dior Oblique high-top sneakers designed by Jones. There's just something about the Dior Oblique monogram that's very relevant for today.
Four giant reversible totes in vintage check by Burberry (SGD2,850 each)
Here's a tote that's even bigger than Bottega Veneta's. And it's reversible too. Burberry's supersized version is crafted in bonded cotton and reveals a contrasting vintage check pattern on the reverse side, for those times you feel like a change would do your outfit good.
Five Saint Louis XXL totes in black by Goyard (SGD2,280 each)
Goyard's Saint Louis tote is arguably the most recognisable bag in the maison's collection. Newly-launched since June 2018, is an even larger version that measures 63cm x 42cm of storage space, almost double the size of the Saint Louis GM. The Saint Louis XXL also comes with a larger pouch than the smaller models. Bigger is definitely better, folks.
Eight linen canvas Saint Laurent Rive Gauch tote bags by Saint Laurent by Anthony Vacarello (SGD1,690 each)
An ode to the original name of Saint Laurent's ready-to-wear collections, the Saint Laurent Rive Gauche tote is sizeable enough and sits somewhere the Dior Oblique Book Tote and the Saint Louis XXL, size-wise. It might be made of linen (getting this relatively pristine might be a problem), but the contrasting leather top handle adds such a sophisticated touch that's definitively Saint Laurent.
247 Maxi Cab rides (SGD55 each)
Oh wait. Maxi Cabs. Why need an oversized bag when you can travel around Singapore and lug even more stuff in a seven-seater cab?
