Surprise: It’s a sunny 25 degrees in old London town. And Riccardo Tisci’s debut at Burberry was all the better for it. Held in a mail centre in South West London, the roof covering was removed moments before the spring/summer 2019 show to let the sunshine in—lighting up the show space constructed out of concrete, mahogany wood and critter glass. A bright start to signal a new chapter for the quintessential British brand and, also—albeit unintentionally—great natural lighting for all the snaps and videos being live streamed and posted on WeChat and the ‘gram.

Designer: Riccardo Tisci
Show venue: The South London Mail Centre
10-word synopsis: A new ‘Burberry Kingdom’ ruled by elevated tailoring and Bambi.
Favourite look: That wheat-coloured car coat in look 62 with its large leather patch pockets and buttoned-up strap fastening across the chest, worn over a zip-up pullover in the same sandy hue, and anchored with tailored charcoal trousers. As we all know, the joy of wearing outerwear, besides protecting us from the elements, is the billow it creates when the wearer is in motion. With the car coat fastened at the chest—as opposed to the waist—it allows for a lot more drama. As a bonus, it’s that happy medium of securing the coat in place and, just as important, still showcasing the layers of your smart ensemble. Definite win in our books.
Favourite accessory: Those leather umbrella carriers worn over suits (see looks 48, 49 and 50) that doubled as a #badass statement harness—a composite of a cross-body silver chain paired with a rubberised bike lock chain around the waist. Yeah, it’s raining, we’re carrying an umbrella, but we’re also going to look like dapper henchmen in the process.
Pieces from Riccardo Tisci’s debut at Burberry are now available for purchase for 24 hours on Instagram, WeChat and at the Regent Street flagship in London.
