Alexander Wang is no stranger to collaborations but for the upcoming one with UNIQLO, it represents a homecoming of sorts. The American fashion designer was first invited to design a range of ready-to-wear pieces for the Japanese label back in 2008. For those who are keeping count, that’s way before Wang started his namesake label.
For the upcoming Alexander Wang x UNIQLO collaboration that launches on the 8th of November, Wang rethinks and subverts the traditional notion of innerwear. Working with a colour palette of black, grey, nude and neon green, the collection turns the HEATTECH fabric into a myriad of long sleeve tees, tank tops, leggings and, a first for UNIQLO, underwear. The silhouette is reminiscent of Wang’s aesthetic-sleek yet sophisticated, that comes with a healthy dose of cool.
But more than just reworking the form, the HEATTECH fabric also sees improvement in the form of the bias weave, which comes in the form of ridges on the fabric. The added texture is a departure from the smooth fabric of the old HEATTECH, and changes appearances with the movement of the body. Melding both form and function, the once-discreet notion of innerwear is elevated and put at the forefront, doubling up as “outerwear”.
“When I look into expanding into additional categories, I seek out partners that really can innovate the product we make and how our fans can access it, said Wang when talking about the collection. “UNIQLO is the ideal partners for this collection of innerwear because we share an appreciation of functionality and utilitarianism, and I am thrilled our collaboration has resulted in developing a new HEATTECH line – the perfect place to pick up from where we left off ten years ago.”
