Every Wednesday we ask a creative or an artisan to share what music gets them going from dawn to dusk. This week, local soul crooner slodown (aka Brian Lim) reveals his favourite motivational beats on a typical day.
The Singapore-born, New York-based R&B artist recently released his debut EP, Nomance, produced by fellow local musician Yllis. A play on the word ‘Romance’, Nomance tells a story about a doomed love affair from start to finish. Accompanying this release are two linked music videos from the singles, ‘Khaled‘ and ‘For the Night‘.
Lim showed no signs of slowing down and followed up with a two-song mini project with underground Western-based, Asian-descended music collective, Eternal Dragonz. Here’s an easter egg: The cover art for the mini-project is designed by design director of Nike (and Lim’s graphic design hero since his polytechnic days), Eric Hu. slowdown has also unlocked an achievement of having his first sold-out headline show in New York. Promising times ahead for the Singaporean soul artist.
1. ‘The Games We Play’—Pusha T
“An album I’ve been listening to repeatedly since its release is Pusha T’s Daytona. It’s almost a flawless album and the perfect record for my journey to work. This song makes me want to recline in a plush leather seat in my mansion’s marble foyer while wearing a Sergio Tacchini tracksuit, plotting on my enemies’ demise over some fresh scallops and champagne with my femme fatale lady friend in red bottoms and Jacquemus garments.”
2. ‘Exhibit C’—Jay Electronica
“Glorious beat, incredible verses. I can’t help but scrunch my face up when listening to this. This song makes me want to punch through a brick wall and wrestle with a fully grown lion in the Sahara after riding there on the back of a shark across the Mediterranean Sea.”
3. ‘I Love You for All Seasons’—The Fuzz
“The 2 songs before this are perfect for starting my work days, but this one here is for the weekends. This song puts a spring in my step and makes me want to drink Coronas and dance with a radiant curly haired lady who’s a critically acclaimed writer, moisturizes daily, recycles, hates Lang Leav, smells like a garden of flowers, doesn’t wear open-toed shoes that are too small for her and has a smile that can bring about world peace.”
4. ‘3 Days in Chengdu’—Bohan Phoenix
“Really connected with this song from the moment I’ve heard it. Shoutout to Bohan that’s ‘lovelove’. Listening to this song in New York makes me miss the fam and friends back home. No funny shit, this track just makes me want to be a better friend and son.”
5. ‘Slow it Down’—Little Brother
“Like the song’s intro says, “this some grown man shit right here.” This song makes me wanna throw all my chains away, tuck my Ralph Lauren polo into my regular fit Khakis and 2-step with the future mother of my children after apologizing for being a terrible partner and sincerely promising to make up for it starting with doing the dishes and folding the clothes.”
6. ‘Boys’—Sam Rui
“My favourite song from one of my favourite local artists and also potentially my future wife (ILY SAM <3). This song makes me feel guilty for cheating on girls I’ve never met or spoken to and makes me want to do CIA level background checks on any guy my future daughter even makes eye contact with.”
“These songs are clearly for the bedroom, so I’m not going to elaborate as there might be minors reading. If you are not a child, however, but you’re trying to make one or at least practice making one, these songs are a good place to start when putting together a playlist for your reproductive endeavours. ”
8. ‘I Want Cha’ Baby’—Billy Paul
9. ‘Distant Lover’—Marvin Gaye
