This was something we weren’t expecting. Multi-hyphenate Pharrell Williams made a surprise announcement this week during Chanel‘s cruise presentation in Thailand: CHANEL – PHARRELL is happening. Pharrell took to the stage in a yellow hoodie decorated with glittery Chanel logos and insignias; a sneak peek into what the collection will look like.
Pharrell has had a longstanding relationship with the French fashion house. It started with Reincarnation, a short film created and directed by creative director Karl Lagerfeld in 2014. Aside from appearing in the film, Pharrell also composed an original soundtrack for it. He’s also been a constant feature for Chanel’s Métiers d’art collections—he was the face of the Paris-Salzburg 2014/15 campaign, and walked for the Paris Cosmopolite 2016/17 show. Shortly after that, Pharrell became the face of the house’s Gabrielle bag campaign.
And then of course, there’s the sold-out Chanel sneakers that he designed as part of a collaborative event between Chanel and the now-defunct Colette. CHANEL – PHARRELL is clearly a natural progression that’s been a long time coming.
Here’s what we know so far:
There will be menswear
It’s unclear if CHANEL – PHARRELL will be fully menswear but what we can confirm is that there will at least be something for us men. Just in case you’re wondering, this will not be Chanel’s first foray into menswear. The house does have menswear but quantities are limited and they’re not as easily available in Chanel boutiques.
More than just sneakers
Chanel and Pharrell are not kidding around with this collaboration. Expect a collection that will include ready-to-wear pieces (such as the yellow hoodie) as well as accessories, so you’re not just limited to a pair of sneakers.
It’s not long now
The CHANEL – PHARRELL collection will drop exclusively on 29 March 2019 in Seoul, South Korea in conjunction with the opening of a new Chanel boutique. It will then be available in select Chanel boutiques worldwide from 4 April 2019.
